Beyoğlu removals

Three things shape access to an address in Beyoğlu: hills, narrow one-way streets and older buildings without lifts. Four out of five streets in Cihangir are one-way or narrow; residents say vehicles struggle to enter some streets in Tarlabaşı; and parts of the area around İstiklal close to traffic after 10.00. Lorries can cross the Bosphorus only via the northern bridge.

For Beyoğlu removals, we head to the plateau north of the Golden Horn, between the Kasımpaşa and Dolmabahçe valleys. The municipality lists 45 neighbourhoods and a resident population of about 225,000 (source: Beyoğlu Municipality, History, accessed 30.09.2026). The District Governorate says the Galata walls were demolished and streets laid out in 1864; the Tophane–Kasımpaşa shore comprises older Turkish neighbourhoods (source: Beyoğlu District Governorate, Government House, accessed 30.09.2026). Galata, Karaköy, Taksim, Kasımpaşa, Hasköy, Tarlabaşı, Dolapdere, Okmeydanı and Çukurcuma are neighbourhood names in everyday use (source: Our muhtars, accessed 30.09.2026). Our map calculation gives an area of about 8.9 km²; we could not find an official area figure. The municipality says streets with gradients up to 10–15% are cleaned by vehicle, while steeper streets and stairways are cleaned by hand (source: Municipal Cleaning Directorate, accessed 30.09.2026).

The OSRM / OpenStreetMap car route from Sancaktepe is 29 km to Kabataş, 33 km to the centre and 35 km to Şişhane; the free-flow journey takes 25–30 minutes (September 2026). Because of the bridge restrictions, a lorry uses Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge. We do not give a separate lorry distance or journey time; we plan it during the site visit.

Crossing the Bosphorus: which bridge takes the lorry

According to KGM, lorries cannot use the 15 July Martyrs Bridge or Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge; they cross via Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge. The Eurasia Tunnel tariff has no lorry class (sources: KGM restrictions and prohibitions, Eurasia Tunnel tolls, accessed 30.09.2026). A lorry loaded on the Asian side therefore approaches from the north; for smaller vehicles, we confirm the permitted crossing for that vehicle class by phone.

Beyoğlu map: neighbourhoods, muhtarlık offices, stations

The map shows neighbourhood boundaries, muhtarlık offices, rail stations and taxi ranks together. Satellite view distinguishes Galata's dense street pattern from Okmeydanı's newer blocks.

Access profile, neighbourhood by neighbourhood

These categories compare Beyoğlu's neighbourhoods with one another, and there is little that could be called level: only Kemankeş Karamustafa Paşa has an average gradient below 6%. In seven neighbourhoods, more than half of street length is one-way or narrow; 18 have no mapped car park. Building heights are recorded at 5% or more coverage in only seven neighbourhoods; we confirm storeys, stair width and lift access during the site visit.

Computed on 2026-09-30 from OpenStreetMap streets, parking areas and buildings inside each neighbourhood; categories are relative to the other neighbourhoods of this district. Narrow = share of local street length that is one-way, under 5.5 m wide or single-lane. Slope = average street grade from the Copernicus DEM (30 m surface model; indicative). * station under construction (İBB).

Here is what the figures mean on the ground:

  • Bosphorus shore and Cihangir slopes – Kemankeş Karamustafa Paşa, Kılıçali Paşa, Pürtelaş Hasan Efendi, Ömer Avni, Gümüşsuyu, Cihangir, Firuzağa and Tomtom: average gradients are 5.6–8.1% in the three shore neighbourhoods and 9.8–12.8% in the five on the slope. Tomtom has a 79% steep-street share; narrow or one-way streets account for 82% in Cihangir, the district high, 71% in Kılıçali Paşa and 69% in Firuzağa. The map records 430 buildings in Firuzağa and 355 in Cihangir, with limited floor data. There are five mapped car parks in Kılıçali Paşa and four in Cihangir, but none in Ömer Avni. The municipal shuttle runs along Defterdar Yokuşu and Boğazkesen (source: Shuttle services, accessed 30.09.2026). The lorry waits at the foot of the hill while we carry belongings up on hand trolleys.
  • Around Galata and Tünel – Arap Cami, Bereketzade, Şahkulu, Müeyyedzade, Hacımimi, Emekyemez, Asmalı Mescit and Evliya Çelebi: average gradients are 8.2–13.8%; Asmalı Mescit is highest, and 76% of streets in Bereketzade are steep. Narrow or one-way streets account for 23–68%; Evliya Çelebi is highest at 68%, followed by Şahkulu at 56%. Buildings with data in Şahkulu average 3.9 storeys; Evliya Çelebi has the district's shortest local street network at 0.8 km. There are four mapped car parks in Arap Cami and none in Asmalı Mescit or Emekyemez. Residents describe barriers and parking problems in Karaköy. We transfer belongings to a smaller vehicle for Galata and schedule the stop early.
  • Taksim and İstiklal – İstiklal, Katip Mustafa Çelebi, Kuloğlu, Hüseyinağa and Kocatepe: average gradients are 7.9–9.9%, with 38–64% of streets steep; the share of narrow or one-way streets ranges from 6% in İstiklal to 59% in Hüseyinağa. Buildings with data average 5.1 storeys in Kuloğlu and 3.9 in Hüseyinağa. There are five mapped car parks in Katip Mustafa Çelebi, four each in Kocatepe and Kuloğlu, and none in İstiklal or Hüseyinağa. Municipal Police officers act against pavement obstruction in restricted areas after 10.00 and are on duty from 08.00 to 00.00 (source: Municipal Police Directorate, accessed 30.09.2026). We start loading before 07.00 and keep the vehicle on a side street.
  • Tarlabaşı and Dolapdere – Bülbül, Kalyoncu Kulluğu, Çukur, Şehit Muhtar, Kamer Hatun, Bostan, Çatma Mescit and Hacıahmet: average gradients are 7.5–12.9%, with 52–73% of streets steep. Although the narrow or one-way share is 0–25%, residents say vehicles cannot enter some streets. Kalyoncu Kulluğu is the smallest neighbourhood at 0.05 km²; its mapped buildings average 6.3 storeys. Hacıahmet has 7.3 km of streets and 347 mapped buildings. There are three car parks in Çatma Mescit and none in Bülbül, Kalyoncu Kulluğu or Çukur. In narrow streets, we carry items by hand and size the team accordingly.
  • Kasımpaşa and Piyalepaşa ridges – Camiikebir, Bedrettin, Kulaksız, Kadı Mehmet Efendi, Yahya Kahya, Küçük Piyale, Piyalepaşa, Yenişehir and Sururi Mehmet Efendi: the three neighbourhoods at the valley floor have gradients of 6–6.2%; on the ridge, gradients range from 10.6% in Kadı Mehmet Efendi to 12.1% in Sururi Mehmet Efendi. The steep-street share ranges from 26% in Küçük Piyale to 65% in Kadı Mehmet Efendi; narrow or one-way streets account for 0–31%. Piyalepaşa has the district's longest local street network (16.2 km) and most mapped buildings (837). Two car parks are mapped in each of Kulaksız and Piyalepaşa; none are recorded in the others. We keep the lorry by the boulevard and add a team member for loading on the ridge.
  • Golden Horn shore – Sütlüce, Halıcıoğlu, Keçeci Piri and Piri Paşa: average gradients are 8.4–10.8%, with 48–59% of streets steep and 4–7% narrow or one-way. Sütlüce covers 0.68 km²; the local street network is 13.8 km in Keçeci Piri and 11.1 km in Piri Paşa. Piri Paşa has 483 mapped buildings; three car parks are mapped in Sütlüce and one in Piri Paşa. The municipal shuttle runs along Elbistan Yokuşu, while residents mention narrow streets and parking pressure. We keep the lorry at a stopping point agreed in advance.
  • The Beyoğlu part of Okmeydanı – Fetihtepe, Kaptanpaşa and Örnektepe: average gradients are 9–10.7%, with 49–57% of streets steep and 17–24% narrow or one-way. Buildings with data in Fetihtepe average 10.2 storeys; floor data is unavailable for the other two. Fetihtepe has 11.7 km of streets and 510 buildings; Örnektepe has 497 buildings across 0.53 km². Two car parks are mapped in Kaptanpaşa and Örnektepe, none in Fetihtepe. Residents describe double parking, so we leave the lorry below and plan lift access and construction-site hours for newer blocks.

What residents say

Summaries of public community discussions, in our own words, with links to the source. These are residents' views, not our crew's notes; we add our own observations as we complete jobs here.

  • Cihangir, Firuzağa, Kılıçali Paşa

Writers over the past two years repeat the same three points: buildings stand close together, there are many hills and streets are narrow. They also describe problems with parking and development; with shops under almost every apartment block, pavements stay busy all day. Walking is easy, they say, but pulling up by car is not.

several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: cihangir (2024-06 – 2026-08)

  • Kemankeş Karamustafa Paşa

A visitor asks where to park a car but receives no answer. Posts say metal barriers were installed on roads towards Tünel, with access diverted through the underground arcade and no alternative for people unable to use the stairs. Large, old bank buildings are described as defining the area's character.

    a few comments · ekşi sözlük: karaköy (2025-09 – 2026-06)

  • Camiikebir, Kulaksız, Bedrettin

Writers call Kasımpaşa one of İstanbul's steepest areas, citing the Akbaba descent and climb. Streets are described as narrow and hilly, with cobbles in places. Complaints also mention former military sites on the shore being turned into hotels and interruptions to the coastal road.

    a few comments · ekşi sözlük: kasımpaşa (2022-04 – 2026-06)

  • Bülbül, Kalyoncu Kulluğu, Çukur, Şehit Muhtar

Writers say some streets are so narrow that even mapping vehicles cannot enter. They describe old buildings that look derelict outside but have restored interiors, with three-storey homes, wooden staircases and high ceilings common; expectations around a reserve area and urban renewal were still being debated in summer 2026.

several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: tarlabaşı (2023-12 – 2026-07)

  • Bostan

Writers say the side streets through the furniture market are empty early in the morning, while the hills become very slippery in the rain.

single opinion · ekşi sözlük: dolapdere (2025-09)

  • Firuzağa, Tomtom

The area is described as having hilly streets and long, steep stairways; there is even a separate discussion titled Çukurcuma Hill. Its streetscape combines Art Nouveau apartment buildings with two- and three-storey homes, with antique shops lining the ground floors.

    a few comments · ekşi sözlük: çukurcuma (2019-05 – 2025-05)

  • Halıcıoğlu, Keçeci Piri, Sütlüce

For years, writers have repeatedly described the streets as narrow and difficult to drive through, with serious parking problems. In contrast, the central location and ring-road connection are seen as reasons to choose the area. They say the neighbourhood has its own Metrobus stop; we could not verify this on an official page.

several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: halıcıoğlu (2017-12 – 2025-11)

  • Örnektepe

In exaggerated terms, writers describe a hill covered in homes as a maze and some streets as too steep even for small motor vehicles. A longstanding, recurring complaint is that neighbours park in two rows, trapping cars, or leave vehicles in the middle of hills overnight.

    a few comments · ekşi sözlük: örnektepe (2005-03 – 2023-10)

  • Fetihtepe, Kaptanpaşa

Writers say the area is divided between Beyoğlu, Kağıthane and Şişli, with E-5 running through it. They describe high-rise blocks going up near E-5 under the banner of urban renewal, and see direct access to E-5 and TEM as an advantage.

single opinion · ekşi sözlük: okmeydanı (2022-12)

  • Fetihtepe

The post describes residents being removed from their homes during urban renewal and identifies this neighbourhood as the Beyoğlu part of the Okmeydanı renewal. The writer criticises the process; we have left out the political commentary.

single opinion · ekşi sözlük: fetihtepe (2022-06)

  • Kemankeş Karamustafa Paşa, Kılıçali Paşa

Writers say people walking downhill towards the sea beside Galatasaray High School encounter a glass barrier that restricts pedestrian access. Parking has been debated since the area's former port days, but no concrete traffic or parking data is shared.

    a few comments · ekşi sözlük: galataport (2025-05 – 2025-11)

  • İstiklal, Gümüşsuyu, Katip Mustafa Çelebi

Writers say police barriers close the square and surrounding streets to both vehicles and pedestrians many times a year, without an announcement of when they will reopen.

Urban renewal and the pedestrianised centre

İBB's plan-note amendment for buildings at risk covers 17 neighbourhoods; neighbourhoods around Cihangir, Galata, Karaköy and Taksim are not on the list (source: İBB Urban Renewal, Beyoğlu plan-note amendment, accessed 30.09.2026). The municipal directorate manages clearance, demolition and agreements in project areas; it has field offices in Okmeydanı and Fetihtepe, and divides the Okmeydanı vision into 30 sub-areas and six clusters (sources: Urban Renewal Directorate, Okmeydanı property-focused planning, accessed 30.09.2026). In summer 2026, the municipality announced plan displays in Piri Paşa and Camiikebir (sources: Piri Paşa plan display, Camiikebir plan display, accessed 30.09.2026). We could not find information on rent or relocation assistance. We can move belongings from a cleared home into storage and deliver them in one go when the new home is ready.

The moves we see most in Beyoğlu

  • Moves between the two sides of the city: between the Asian side and Cihangir, Galata or Kasımpaşa; because of the bridge rule, departure time and route are the backbone of the plan.
  • Single-person homes (1+1 – one bedroom plus a living room, or a studio): smaller flats in Cihangir, Galata and Tarlabaşı; fewer belongings, narrow stairs and often no lift.
  • Family homes (2+1 or 3+1 – two or three bedrooms plus a living room): in the apartment blocks of Kasımpaşa, Piyalepaşa and the Golden Horn ridges, we plan dismantling, packing and team size for the slope.
  • Offices, shops and workshops: former bank and inn buildings in Karaköy and Galata, shops around İstiklal and furniture workshops in Dolapdere; moves may need to happen out of hours or early in the morning.
  • Moves from older buildings: in buildings residents describe as having wooden stairs and high ceilings, we check stair width and the street for an exterior lift during the site visit.
  • Urban-renewal clearances and storage: while buildings are renewed in Okmeydanı, Fetihtepe and the Golden Horn ridges, belongings may need to wait for months; we plan the move and storage together.

The municipality is at No. 121 Meşrutiyet Avenue, Şahkulu neighbourhood; its Contact Centre is 444 0 160, and residents can use its web request system and e-municipality service. No WhatsApp line is listed (source: Beyoğlu Municipality contact, accessed 30.09.2026).

Permits for lorries and exterior lifts: we could not find a published rule or fee for a removals vehicle or mobile lift. Municipal Police officers act against obstruction of pavements and pedestrian routes in restricted areas after 10.00; no list of restricted areas is published (accessed 30.09.2026). We schedule loading early in İstiklal and Galata and recommend checking details with the Contact Centre on 444 0 160.

Old furniture, rubble and waste collection days: the Municipal Cleaning Directorate collects rubbish daily; times are announced on posters and by public address, but there is no online schedule. Small amounts of renovation rubble are collected for a fee on a scheduled basis; bulky waste is also collected on a schedule, with no separate phone line listed. Ask the Contact Centre on 444 0 160 about making a request (source: Municipal Cleaning Directorate, accessed 30.09.2026). No packaging collection day is published. We take away the moving boxes and packing materials.

Public transport

The M2 Yenikapı–Hacıosman line has Haliç, Şişhane and Taksim stations in the district. Haliç station is on the bridge; Şişhane is a deep station with 30 escalators and five lifts. At Şişhane, passengers can change to the T2 İstiklal tram and F2 Tünel; at Taksim, to T2 and F1 (source: Metro İstanbul M2, accessed 30.09.2026). The F1 Taksim–Kabataş funicular page gives an official measure of the steep Gümüşsuyu slope: there is a 70-metre elevation difference between its two stations, and Kabataş connects with T1, City Lines ferries, İDO and BUDO (source: Metro İstanbul F1, accessed 30.09.2026). The T1 tram follows the shore, stopping at Kabataş, Fındıklı, Tophane and Karaköy (source: Metro İstanbul T1, accessed 30.09.2026). Beyoğlu is not on the M7 station list; the Kabataş extension is described as opening once completed, and İBB's layer shows the stop as under construction (source: Metro İstanbul M7, accessed 30.09.2026). Residents of Halıcıoğlu mention a Metrobus stop in the neighbourhood; Metro İstanbul's pages do not cover Metrobus, so we could not verify this with an official source. The municipality's four free shuttle routes run on weekdays during the day (source: Shuttle services, above). For a move, Taksim, Şişhane and Karaköy squares become busy from the morning, so we start loading early at nearby addresses.
