Fatih removals

Moving on the Historic Peninsula means planning around streets closed to vehicle traffic, slopes down to the Golden Horn and the bridge a lorry can use from the Asian side. A hotel or wholesaler entrance in Laleli, the stairways residents describe in Balat and the flatter, quieter streets of Yedikule all sit within the same district.

For Fatih removals, we plan vehicle access within the old walled city, the Historic Peninsula, alongside hills and the bridge route. The District Governorate lists 57 neighbourhoods across 15.6 km², with the Golden Horn to the north, the Sea of Marmara to the south and the land walls to the west (sources: Geography, Our neighbourhoods, accessed 30.09.2026). The municipality names Zeytinburnu, Bayrampaşa and Eyüpsultan as neighbouring districts; Beyoğlu lies across the Golden Horn (source: Fatih today, accessed 30.09.2026). Eminönü became part of Fatih in 2009; Sirkeci and the Grand Bazaar are also within the district.

The car route from Sancaktepe to Fatih is about 30–38 km and takes 30–35 minutes in free-flowing traffic: Gülhane is about 32 km away and Pazartekke about 38 km (source: OSRM / OpenStreetMap, September 2026). This route uses either the 15 July Martyrs Bridge or the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge; a lorry must use Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, making its journey longer.

Crossing the Bosphorus: which bridge takes the lorry

A lorry coming from the Asian side cannot use the 15 July Martyrs Bridge or Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. KGM restricts these to first- and second-class vehicles, while Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge is open to all motor vehicle classes. The Eurasia Tunnel tariff lists cars, minibuses and motorcycles, but no lorry class (sources: KGM restrictions and prohibitions, Eurasia Tunnel tolls, accessed 30.09.2026). The lorry heads north, crosses to the European side via Yavuz Sultan Selim, then continues towards the district; this detour and the Golden Horn crossing add to the day. For a smaller vehicle, we confirm the permitted crossing for its class by phone.

Fatih map: neighbourhoods, muhtarlık offices, stations

The map shows the boundaries of all 57 neighbourhoods, muhtarlık offices, rail stations and taxi ranks. Satellite view makes the land walls, Golden Horn shore and the Yedikule–Samatya streetscape easier to distinguish.

Access profile, neighbourhood by neighbourhood

These categories compare Fatih's 57 neighbourhoods with one another; even level areas can be affected by the old street pattern. Demirtaş is the steepest neighbourhood at 13.6%, followed by Sururi at 11.1%; Rüstempaşa is the least steep at 3.6%. Floor data is missing for most neighbourhoods, so we check building height during the site visit.

Computed on 2026-09-30 from OpenStreetMap streets, parking areas and buildings inside each neighbourhood; categories are relative to the other neighbourhoods of this district. Narrow = share of local street length that is one-way, under 5.5 m wide or single-lane. Slope = average street grade from the Copernicus DEM (30 m surface model; indicative). * station under construction (İBB).

Here is what to expect on moving day, area by area:

  • Eminönü, Sirkeci and Tahtakale – Hobyar, Rüstempaşa, Tahtakale, Sarıdemir and Hocapaşa: the local street network is limited; main roads, inn courtyards and arcades define access. More than hills, the key questions are where the lorry can stop and how far belongings must travel by hand trolley to an inn entrance. We schedule wholesaler moves before businesses open.
  • Sultanahmet, Cankurtaran and Küçük Ayasofya: the shore is relatively level, but one-way streets and tour coaches restrict access. We choose a loading time before visitor numbers build.
  • The Grand Bazaar and Çemberlitaş ridge – Mercan and Binbirdirek: narrow, steep streets make lorry access difficult; Beyazıt has no mapped local streets. We leave the vehicle on a main road and carry belongings uphill with team support.
  • Laleli and Aksaray – Mesihpaşa, Kemalpaşa, Mimar Kemalettin and Balabanağa: hotel and wholesaler traffic limits loading space. Vehicle registration may be needed to enter the restricted area in Laleli; in Aksaray, we look for a loading point close to a main road.
  • Fındıkzade, Çapa, Cerrahpaşa and Kocamustafapaşa – Molla Gürani, Haseki Sultan, Cerrahpaşa, Koca Mustafapaşa, Şehremini and Seyyid Ömer: hospital and market traffic affects loading times. During the site visit, we confirm the building entrance and where the lorry can wait.
  • Yedikule, Samatya and Silivrikapı – Yedikule, Silivrikapı, Sümbül Efendi and Mevlanakapı: the more regular street pattern makes lorry access easier. The Kumkapı side is level but crowded; we choose the vehicle size and loading point for the specific address.
  • Golden Horn shore – Ayvansaray, Balat, Cibali, Yavuz Sultan Selim and Zeyrek: roads climb from the shore towards the Çarşamba ridge. Residents describe stairways in Balat; as the lorry may have to stay on the coastal road, we carry belongings uphill with team support.
  • The walled-city streets of Karagümrük, Topkapı and Sulukule – Karagümrük, Topkapı, Akşemsettin, Derviş Ali, Hırka-i Şerif, Atikali and İskenderpaşa: slopes and tight turns vary from one street to another. We decide on team size and, for addresses close to main roads, the lorry's stopping point during the site visit.

Vehicles and timing on the Historic Peninsula

According to the municipality's Municipal Police Directorate, vehicle traffic has been closed and 228 streets and avenues pedestrianised, including the Laleli and Eminönü restricted areas. The Directorate says these closures are based on UKOME decisions and that vehicles obstructing streets or pavements in closed areas are towed to a car pound. It provides a sample application for vehicle registration for logistics and business vehicles in Laleli, so entry to the restricted area by vehicle is subject to registration. We could not find an official page giving the time window, weight limit or lorry restriction, and could not verify the decisions themselves with UKOME (source: Municipal Police Directorate, accessed 30.09.2026). The District Governorate's economy page also says Sultanahmet Square is reserved for tourists and tour coaches, while Nuruosmaniye Avenue and the Kumkapı restaurants area are closed to traffic (source: Fatih District Governorate – Economy, accessed 30.09.2026). The Municipal Police also says ten temporary street markets operate six days a week; the website does not list which neighbourhood has a market on which day.

Our approach is to identify the nearest open street and hand-trolley distance during the site visit for an address inside a restricted area, and to check the registration application with the municipality in advance if needed. Around Sultanahmet, the Grand Bazaar and Eminönü, we start before 07.00; where a street hosts a market, we rule out market day from the plan.

What residents say

Summaries of public community discussions, in our own words, with links to the source. These are residents' views, not our crew's notes; we add our own observations as we complete jobs here.

  • Koca Mustafapaşa, Sümbül Efendi, Cerrahpaşa

Residents say Kocamustafapaşa's streets are very narrow, and some have to leave their vehicles far away on market day. Posts also mention adjoining older apartment blocks, walking distance to Cerrahpaşa and lorries arriving early for the Saturday market. Recent discussions complain about roadworks, renewal demolitions and construction dust.

several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: kocamustafapaşa (2025-11 – 2026-09)

  • Şehremini

Even a resident who likes the neighbourhood names parking as the main complaint, saying it can take up to an hour and a half to find a space in the evening. Older posts describe apartment buildings standing close together and the area's neighbourhood character.

single opinion · ekşi sözlük: şehremini (2025-09)

  • Yedikule, Silivrikapı

Residents mention Yedikule's complex streets and neglected older buildings. More recent posts highlight the walls, shore, quiet streets and walks along İstasyon Avenue.

    a few comments · ekşi sözlük: yedikule (2022-08 – 2026-05)

  • Beyazıt, Mesihpaşa, Kemalpaşa

Closing the area between Laleli and Beyazıt to vehicle traffic is viewed positively, although fast-moving motorbikes on the pedestrian route are described as a problem. An older post portrays the area as a constant scene of excavations and road repairs.

    a few comments · ekşi sözlük: tarihi yarımada (2025-05 – 2025-11)

  • Balat, Ayvansaray

Writers say the area can only really be understood on foot and that exploring by car makes little sense. They describe colourful wooden houses, stairway streets and crowds taking photographs; streets are often closed for television and film shoots, and shops are said to remain shut until midday on weekdays.

    a few comments · ekşi sözlük: balat (2026-02 – 2026-08)

  • Yavuz Sultan Selim, Derviş Ali, Atikali

Residents describe the hill from Balat up to Çukurbostan and the Çarşamba ridge. Posts also highlight a strong neighbourhood identity and lively relationships between neighbours.

    a few comments · ekşi sözlük: fatih çarşamba (2021-02 – 2026-04)

  • Sultan Ahmet, Cankurtaran, Küçük Ayasofya

Behind the tourist square, writers describe steep streets lined with old houses and a tight-knit area where children play football in the middle of the street. They also mention the tram stop and the concentration of local businesses.

single opinion · ekşi sözlük: sultanahmet (2021-07)

  • Koca Mustafapaşa, Yedikule

A writer who grew up in the area describes old homes and narrow streets, with the centre around Marmara Avenue and the former railway station. They portray an older streetscape facing the sea, where mosques and churches stand on the same street.

a few comments · ekşi sözlük: samatya (semt) (2023-04)

  • Muhsine Hatun, Nişanca, Katip Kasım

One writer describes the buildings and streets as neglected but full of character, old yet still standing. They portray a substantial stock of older buildings and a population largely made up of migrants.

single opinion · ekşi sözlük: kumkapı (2022-02)

  • Cibali, Yavuz Sinan

Writers describe old bay-windowed houses and report that part of a wall collapsed in strong winds on the vacant site of a demolished summer cinema. A more recent post notes that a restored building opposite the police station divides the coastal road and narrows it at that point.

    a few comments · ekşi sözlük: cibali (2021-03 – 2026-02)

  • Rüstempaşa, Tahtakale, Hobyar, Mercan

Commenters list wholesale inns and streets: Şark Han for souvenirs and imports, Marpuççular and Gürün inns for costume jewellery, Doğubank for electronics, and Hasırcılar Avenue and Kantarcılar Street for baking equipment. Very old inns such as Büyük Valide Han are also mentioned.

    a few comments · ekşi sözlük: eminönü (2026-05 – 2026-09)

  • Koca Mustafapaşa, Yedikule, Muhsine Hatun

Residents describe T6 as a single-track line with services about half an hour apart, and find Kumkapı and Samatya stations useful around Kocamustafapaşa. They speak positively of the coastal walking and cycling route beside the line from Yedikule to Sarayburnu, while criticising the former suburban railway's long closure.

The moves we see most in Fatih

  • Moves between the two sides of the city: from the Asian side into the walled city, or the other way round; the bridge restriction and Golden Horn crossing make route planning the first priority.
  • Single-person and student homes (1+1 – one bedroom plus a living room, or a studio): around İstanbul University's Beyazıt and Vezneciler campuses; fewer belongings, a smaller vehicle and a two-person team.
  • Family homes (2+1 or 3+1 – two or three bedrooms plus a living room): in the older apartment buildings of Kocamustafapaşa, Şehremini, Karagümrük and Yedikule, we plan dismantling, packing and team size for narrow stairways.
  • Shops, inns and wholesale businesses: the inns of Eminönü, Tahtakale and Laleli; out-of-hours work, hand-trolley distance and registration for restricted areas need to be planned together.
  • Hotel and guesthouse belongings: according to the District Governorate's undated page, Laleli has almost entirely become a hotel district; room moves are planned for the night or early morning.
  • Clearance of at-risk buildings and storage: the municipality says there is at least 60 days for demolition after notice in its at-risk-building process, with at least 30 additional days if needed (source: At-risk building application process, accessed 30.09.2026). As belongings may need to wait during this period, we plan the move and storage together.

You can check the volume of your belongings and a suitable vehicle size on our moving calculator.

Fatih Municipality's main building is at No. 54 Adnan Menderes (Vatan) Boulevard, Akşemsettin neighbourhood; its call centre, FABİM, is 0 212 453 14 53 and opening hours are 08.30–17.00. Residents can use the web form, the Suriçi Fatih mobile app and the e-Devlet –Requests and Suggestions– channel for requests and complaints. Municipal Police can also be contacted at zabita@fatih.bel.tr; no WhatsApp line is listed. The Suser service building in Yenikapı is in Cerrahpaşa neighbourhood (sources: Contact, FABİM, accessed 30.09.2026). Numbering and address records are handled by the Urban Planning Directorate (source: Urban Planning Directorate, accessed 30.09.2026).

Permits for lorries and exterior lifts: we could not find a published rule or fee on the municipality website for a removals lorry or mobile lift temporarily using the road (accessed 30.09.2026). Details of the 228 pedestrianised streets and Laleli vehicle registration are above; for addresses inside a restricted area or on a narrow one-way street, we recommend contacting FABİM or Municipal Police before moving day.

Old furniture, rubble and waste collection days: the Municipal Cleaning Directorate says household waste is collected to a schedule and bulky items are collected under a tender. Rubble collection is chargeable, and illegal dumping is subject to a fine. Reported electronic waste is collected from the address; fixed drop-off points are in Fındıkzade and Yavuz Selim Çukurbostan (sources: Municipal Cleaning Directorate, Class I Waste Drop-off Centre, accessed 30.09.2026). Neighbourhood collection days and the channel for requesting old-furniture collection are not published; these need to be confirmed with FABİM. We take away the packing materials after the move.

Public transport

Fatih has several rail options: the M1 metro's Yenikapı, Aksaray, Emniyet-Fatih and Topkapı-Ulubatlı stations; Yenikapı and Vezneciler-İstanbul Üniversitesi on M2; 13 T1 tram stops from Eminönü to Pazartekke; the T5 Golden Horn tram stops at Eminönü, Küçükpazar, Cibali, Fener, Balat and Ayvansaray; and the Sirkeci and Yenikapı Marmaray stations. Metro İstanbul says the lines operate from 06.00 to 00.00. At Yenikapı, passengers can change between M1, M2 and Marmaray; at Eminönü, between T1, T5 and the ferry piers; and at Vezneciler, between M2 and T1 (sources: M1A, M2, T1, T5, accessed 30.09.2026). Sirkeci–Kazlıçeşme T6 has no separate Metro İstanbul page; Kumkapı and Samatya stations appear in community discussions. For a move, this means we do not wait with a lorry on tram streets such as Divanyolu, Ordu or Millet; we access the address from a side street. Residents say the coastal road narrows at Cibali.

Urban renewal

Building renewal in Fatih is affected by conservation decisions. Fatih is not included in İBB's additional plan note. The municipality's plan excludes the former Eminönü, World Heritage and Land Walls conservation areas, as well as first- and second-degree conservation zones; it does not list which neighbourhoods are affected (sources: New zoning plan note, İBB additional plan note, accessed 30.09.2026). After a risk report is approved by the municipality and registered on the title deed, there is a 15-day objection period and at least 60 days for demolition; if demolition does not happen, an additional period of at least 30 days is allowed. Rent assistance is handled by the Urban Renewal Office within the Urban Planning Directorate; notices under Law 6306 are posted at the muhtarlık (sources: At-risk building application process, Urban Planning Directorate, Municipal Police Directorate, accessed 30.09.2026). We move belongings from a building being cleared into storage, then deliver them again when the new building is ready.

Neighbouring districts
