Üsküdar removals

In Üsküdar, two things shape the move: the slopes and the Bosphorus. The coastal neighbourhoods from Kuzguncuk to Kandilli have steep, narrow streets, while the Çamlıca ridges are hilly too. For a move between the two sides of İstanbul, the bridge a lorry can use is the key question.

Üsküdar is a district (ilçe in Turkish) whose steep terrain, from the Bosphorus shore to the Çamlıca ridges, affects both the route and access to buildings on moving day. The District Governorate lists 33 neighbourhoods (mahalle in Turkish; source: Üsküdar District Governorate, Local Authorities, accessed 29.09.2026). The municipality says the district covers about 35.7 km² and has more than 2,500 streets and avenues; Büyük Çamlıca reaches 268 metres and Küçük Çamlıca 229 metres. It describes a narrow coastline and a district spread through a valley with hills on both sides (source: Üsküdar Municipality, Üsküdar in Numbers and Üsküdar Today, accessed 29.09.2026). Its neighbouring districts are Kadıköy, Beykoz, Ümraniye and Ataşehir.

The road journey from our Sancaktepe base is about 18–24 km; Bulgurlu and Çamlıca are closer, while the ferry terminal area is farther away. In free-flowing traffic, the drive takes 15–20 minutes; an early-morning departure is likely to be close to that time (source: OSRM / OpenStreetMap, September 2026).

Üsküdar map: neighbourhoods, muhtarlık offices, stations

The map shows the boundaries of all 33 neighbourhoods, muhtarlık offices, M5 and M4 metro stations, Marmaray stations and taxi ranks. Satellite view shows the contrast between the dense older fabric along the Bosphorus, the green Çamlıca ridges and the larger residential areas in Yavuztürk.

Access profile, neighbourhood by neighbourhood

The categories are relative to Üsküdar's own neighbourhoods; even a "flat" area here is steeper than the Kadıköy coast. Only three of the 33 neighbourhoods have an average gradient below 6%.

Computed on 2026-09-29 from OpenStreetMap streets, parking areas and buildings inside each neighbourhood; categories are relative to the other neighbourhoods of this district. Narrow = share of local street length that is one-way, under 5.5 m wide or single-lane. Slope = average street grade from the Copernicus DEM (30 m surface model; indicative). * station under construction (İBB).

The data translates into these moving-day considerations:

  • Bosphorus slopes — Kandilli, Kuleli, Küplüce, Çengelköy, Kuzguncuk and Beylerbeyi: average gradients are 8.4–12.1%, and 56–72% of street length is steep. Residents describe narrow coastal streets and steep approach roads. Do not assume the lorry can reach the door; choosing a loading point during the site visit helps establish the carrying distance and team size.
  • The centre and old market streets — Valide-i Atik, Ahmediye, Salacak, Acıbadem, Muratreis, Sultantepe and Aziz Mahmut Hüdayi: one-way streets account for 27–61%, among the district's highest shares. Gradients are moderate in most areas, but steep in Sultantepe and Aziz Mahmut Hüdayi. The challenge is less the slope than finding a stopping place on a narrow one-way street without holding up traffic; we plan loading for early morning.
  • Çamlıca ridges and the north-east — Kısıklı, Güzeltepe, Kirazlıtepe, Mehmet Akif Ersoy, Ferah, Yavuztürk, Burhaniye and Bahçelievler: average gradients are 8.1–10.8%, and 48–66% of streets are steep, though many are wider and two-way. Yavuztürk has the longest local street network at 40.2 km and the most buildings, at 3,231. Agreeing the address and the vehicle's approach route in advance reduces manoeuvring and loading time on the slopes.
  • The smaller, relatively flatter group — Altunizade, Zeynep Kamil and Bulgurlu: average gradients are 4.9–5.7%; Barbaros is on the edge at 6%. Altunizade has 52 mapped car parks, and serves as a metro and Metrobus interchange. Around offices and hospitals, agreeing a loading time in advance helps avoid busy arrivals and departures.

Zeynep Kamil

Zeynep Kamil is a small neighbourhood known for its hospital: about 0.4 km², 3.8 km of local streets and an average gradient of 5.2%, making it one of Üsküdar's flatter areas. 12% of streets are one-way and 14% are narrow. Building heights are not mapped, so we confirm the number of floors during the site visit. The Bağlarbaşı and Altunizade M5 stations are nearby. Daytime traffic and the ambulance route around the hospital can limit loading; we need to agree the time and stopping place in advance.

Crossing the Bosphorus: which bridge takes the lorry

For moves between Üsküdar and the European side, the route is part of the plan. According to the General Directorate of Highways' restrictions table, the 15 July Martyrs Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge are closed to lorry classes; Yavuz Sultan Selim is the only bridge open to all classes. The Eurasia Tunnel's published toll classes cover cars, minibuses and motorcycles, but not lorries (sources: General Directorate of Highways, Restrictions and Prohibitions and Eurasia Tunnel tolls, accessed 29.09.2026). As a result, a lorry travelling from Üsküdar to the European side goes north via Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge. This adds distance and time, which we include in the site-visit plan. For smaller vehicles carrying fewer belongings, we confirm the permitted crossing by phone according to the vehicle class.

What residents say

Summaries of public community discussions, in our own words, with links to the source. These are residents' views, not our crew's notes; we add our own observations as we complete jobs here.

  • Çengelköy

Upper Çengelköy is described as having very steep hills, gecekondu-style homes and large gated estates that block through routes. Many streets have no pavements, with vans and service vehicles parked along the sides. By the shore, weekend crowds and restaurant valets make the narrow side streets around Çınaraltı almost impassable.

several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: çengelköy (2024–2026)

  • Kuzguncuk

Someone who moved here recently says parking is a problem, though there is usually space on the side streets, and public transport routes via Üsküdar. Cafés spreading onto the pavements keep the main street busy throughout the day. The housing includes older houses with small gardens and bay windows.

several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: kuzguncuk (2025-12 – 2026-09)

  • Beylerbeyi

Several residents say the coastal road is congested for much of the day, especially in the morning. A long-time resident says there has been little new development and the area remains largely older and low-rise.

a few comments · ekşi sözlük: beylerbeyi (2024–2026)

  • Beylerbeyi

Posts describe weekend gridlock on Yalı Avenue, which has one lane in each direction. One resident says they could not get out of a side street for an hour; others blame vehicles parked in front of shops.

    a few comments · ekşi sözlük: 21 kasım 2021 beylerbeyi trafiği (2021-11)

  • Burhaniye

Writers say Burhaniye is mostly villas, with very few apartment blocks, and that people often mistake it for Kirazlıtepe.

single opinion · ekşi sözlük: beylerbeyi burhaniye'de oturmak istemek (2021-08)

  • Kandilli

Kandilli is described as quiet but full of hills; Sıraevler and Yasemen streets are said to be scenic but steep, and homeowners are reportedly careful about protecting the areas in front of their buildings.

a few comments · ekşi sözlük: kandilli (2021–2023)

  • Salacak

Posts say roadworks narrowed the coastal street so that only one vehicle can pass in each direction.

single opinion · ekşi sözlük: salacak (2024-03)

  • Sultantepe

One resident jokes that the neighbourhood has more stairs and hills than all of Kadıköy; the street layout is steep and stepped.

single opinion · ekşi sözlük: sultantepe (2026-09)

  • Bulgurlu

Residents praise the new apartment blocks on solid ground and the metro–Metrobus connection. The recurring complaints are traffic on and around Bulgurlu Avenue and difficulty finding parking.

several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: bulgurlu (2023–2025)

  • Ünalan

Someone who moved here recently says parking was not a problem, but streets are not consistently arranged as one-way or two-way, so drivers often have to reverse. The neighbourhood sits uphill from both the metro and Metrobus; one writer describes the layout as many entrances but a single exit.

a few comments · ekşi sözlük: ünalan mahallesi (2023–2026)

  • Kirazlıtepe, Küplüce

Kirazlıtepe and Küplüce are described as a bottleneck feeding traffic to the bridge. Most homes around the junction have been replaced through urban renewal by new three- to four-storey buildings, and construction is continuing around the final stop.

a few comments · ekşi sözlük: kirazlıtepe (2020–2021)

  • Kısıklı

Posts say Çakaldağ Park became a metro construction site, the muhtarlık moved to Ferah Avenue, and the bridge is about five minutes away without traffic.

The moves we see most in Üsküdar

  • Moves between the two sides: between Üsküdar and the European side, bridge restrictions make route and timing more important than for moves within a single district.
  • 1+1 and studio moves in Çengelköy, Kuzguncuk and Kandilli: a 1+1 has one bedroom plus a living room; the slope, narrow streets and building entrance affect vehicle size and carrying distance.
  • Family homes on the Çamlıca ridges and Bosphorus slopes (2+1 and 3+1): a 2+1 has two bedrooms plus a living room, and a 3+1 has three bedrooms plus a living room. We plan the vehicle approach and team size for each address.
  • Offices in Altunizade and workplaces around the ferry terminals: we plan out-of-hours work, goods-lift bookings and separate packing for archives.
  • Urban-renewal moves and storage: when a building is being rebuilt, belongings may need to stay in storage for months; we plan the move and storage together.

Üsküdar Municipality's service building is at No. 35 Çavuşdere Avenue, Mimar Sinan neighbourhood. Its switchboard is (0216) 531 30 00 and its resident request line, Süper Hizmet, is 444 0 875. The Municipal Police Directorate can be reached through extension 3801; there are police points in İskele, Çarşı, Harem and Çengelköy (source: Üsküdar Municipality, Municipal Police Directorate and Climate Change and Zero Waste Directorate, accessed 29.09.2026).

Permits for lorries and exterior lifts: we could not find a published specific rule or fee on the municipality's website for a moving vehicle or mobile lift temporarily using the road (accessed 29.09.2026). The Municipal Police regulations are available on the site as a PDF, but we do not make a claim without checking them. On narrow, sloping streets, the best option is to ask through extension 3801 or the Süper Hizmet line before moving day.

Old furniture, rubble and waste collection days: the Cleaning Affairs Directorate lists construction and demolition waste collection and removal among its responsibilities, but does not publish an application route, limits or fees. There are drop-off centres and mobile collection points for old furniture. Household waste is collected every day after 18.30; packaging waste is collected after 18.30 on Tuesdays and Fridays according to the municipality's list. Check the day for your neighbourhood, and put waste out only at collection time (source: Cleaning Affairs Directorate and Packaging Waste Collection Days and Times, accessed 29.09.2026). We take away the boxes and packaging from your move; we can plan for old furniture during the site visit.

Public transport

The M5 metro starts at Üsküdar and serves Fıstık Ağacı, Bağlarbaşı, Altunizade, Kısıklı and Bulgurlu. It runs 06.00–24.00 on weekdays, with a continuous overnight service from Friday morning to Sunday night at weekends. Üsküdar station connects with Marmaray, İETT buses and ferry terminals; Altunizade connects with the Metrobus. Kısıklı station can be accessed only by lift (source: Metro İstanbul M5, accessed 29.09.2026). To the south, M4's Ünalan and Göztepe stations are in Ünalan neighbourhood (source: Metro İstanbul M4, accessed 29.09.2026). On moving day, loading is difficult around the ferry square and Altunizade junction at peak times; station areas can also become busy early on weekend mornings.

Urban renewal

An İBB plan-note amendment on urban renewal (kentsel dönüşüm of earthquake-risk buildings) in Üsküdar covers regulations concerning at-risk buildings in a list of neighbourhoods including Ferah, Bulgurlu, Kısıklı, Ünalan, Küçük Çamlıca, Acıbadem, Altunizade, Barbaros, Cumhuriyet, İcadiye, Selami Ali and Zeynep Kamil. An 8.8-hectare urban-renewal and development area has also been declared in Kuzguncuk–İcadiye (sources: İBB plan-note amendment and Kuzguncuk area, accessed 29.09.2026). The municipality's Urban Transformation Directorate says it coordinates residents' and belongings' evacuation with other departments during at-risk building processes (source: Urban Transformation Directorate, accessed 29.09.2026). We pack belongings from an at-risk building and move them into storage, then place them in the new building once it is ready. For İBB rent support eligibility, see its relevant page.

Neighbouring districts

Üsküdar borders Kadıköy, Beykoz, Ümraniye and Ataşehir. We assess the slopes, streets and floors at both addresses, then plan the time and team accordingly. For the whole city, see our İstanbul removals page.
