Sarıyer removals
Moving in Sarıyer means planning for three very different settings: the steep, narrow streets on the Bosphorus shore; the high-rise offices of Maslak–Ayazağa; and the spacious but distant estate and village roads around Zekeriyaköy and Kilyos. The bridge our lorry can use from the Asian side is the first item in the plan.
Sarıyer covers 38 neighbourhoods from the Bosphorus shore in northern European İstanbul to the Black Sea. The municipality says it builds steps and retaining walls because of the uneven terrain, and that emergency vehicles have difficulty reaching dead-end streets (source: Infrastructure, accessed 30.09.2026). The District Governorate describes a concentration of hotels and restaurants along the shore and weekend crowds in Belgrad Forest (source: History, accessed 30.09.2026). We could not find an official list of neighbouring districts; the map shows Beşiktaş and Şişli to the south, Kağıthane to the south-west and Eyüpsultan to the west.
The car-profile road distance from our Sancaktepe base to Sarıyer is about 27–56 km: 27 km to Rumeli Hisarüstü, 34 km to Hacıosman and around 56 km to Sarıyer centre. In free-flowing traffic, this profile takes 20–45 minutes; an early-morning departure is likely to be close to that estimate (source: OSRM / OpenStreetMap, September 2026). These figures use a car route via the 15 July Martyrs and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges. Our lorry cannot use either bridge; as explained below, it crosses via Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, making the journey longer.
Crossing the Bosphorus: which bridge takes the lorry
The General Directorate of Highways restrictions list says 15 July Martyrs Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge are open only to first- and second-class vehicles, so lorries cannot use them. Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge is open to all motor vehicle classes. The Eurasia Tunnel tariff lists cars, minibuses and motorcycles, but no lorry class (sources: KGM restrictions and prohibitions, Eurasia Tunnel tolls, accessed 30.09.2026). Sarıyer has one advantage under this rule: according to the map, the European-side approach to Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge is in Garipçe neighbourhood, within the district. Our lorry from the Asian side crosses via the Northern Marmara Motorway and enters from the north around Rumelifeneri, Zekeriyaköy and Uskumruköy. This is a longer route than the southern bridges for Maslak and the Bosphorus shore, so we add the time to the day plan during the site visit. For smaller moves, we confirm by phone which crossing is allowed for the vehicle class.
Sarıyer map: neighbourhoods, muhtarlık offices, stations
The map shows all 38 neighbourhood boundaries, muhtarlık offices, rail stations and taxi ranks. It distinguishes the Bosphorus hillsides, Maslak and the forest landscape to the north.
Access profile, neighbourhood by neighbourhood
The categories compare Sarıyer's 38 neighbourhoods with one another; average gradients are above 6% in 30 of them. Building heights are not recorded across most of the district, so we confirm storeys during the site visit.

Computed on 2026-09-30 from OpenStreetMap streets, parking areas and buildings inside each neighbourhood; categories are relative to the other neighbourhoods of this district. Narrow = share of local street length that is one-way, under 5.5 m wide or single-lane. Slope = average street grade from the Copernicus DEM (30 m surface model; indicative). * station under construction (İBB).
Here is what the profile means on moving day:
- Bosphorus shore hillsides – Rumelihisarı, Emirgan, İstinye, Tarabya and Kireçburnu: streets climbing inland from the shore may not allow a lorry to reach the door. During the visit, we decide where the vehicle can stop, how many movers are needed and, if required, where to position an exterior lift.
- Maslak–Ayazağa office corridor – Maslak, Ayazağa, Huzur and Reşitpaşa: goods-lift booking times, security registration and service traffic at offices and gated sites determine the plan. For office moves, we book the goods lift in advance and load outside business hours.
- Hacıosman–Darüşşafaka ridge – Çamlıtepe, Darüşşafaka, Poligon, Fatih Sultan Mehmet, Pınar, Ferahevler and Cumhuriyet: streets may be wider than those on the shore, but the gradient continues. We size the team for the slope and check the lorry's turning space at the building entrance.
- Zekeriyaköy–Uskumruköy estates and Bahçeköy – Zekeriyaköy, Uskumruköy, Demirciköy, Bahçeköy Kemer, Bahçeköy Merkez and PTT Evleri: wider roads and longer distances between addresses stand out; the gradient rises noticeably in Bahçeköy Yeni Mahalle. We confirm estate registration, vehicle restrictions and garden-gate width during the visit.
- Black Sea villages and the Bosphorus tip – Kumköy (Kilyos), Rumelifeneri, Garipçe, Gümüşdere, Kısırkaya and Rumelikavağı: addresses are spread out and forest roads are long. Residents describe Kilyos's main street as narrow and open to traffic. For summer homes and village houses, we agree the route and loading point in advance.
- Sarıyer centre and the back ridge – Merkez, Yeni Mahalle, Kazım Karabekir Paşa and Maden: loading space is limited around the market and ferry pier; further uphill, slopes meet tight turns. We use an early start and a smaller vehicle at many addresses.
What residents say
Summaries of public community discussions, in our own words, with links to the source. These are residents' views, not our crew's notes; we add our own observations as we complete jobs here.
- Merkez
Residents write that in summer and at weekends the shore road is gridlocked from Sarıyer centre to Beşiktaş and parking is almost impossible. They mention potholes on Taşkıran and Nalbantçeşme streets that can scrape a car's underside, damaged pavements on the descent from İTÜ, and dense older informal housing above the centre.
several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: sarıyer (2024-07 – 2026-08)
- Maslak
Posts describe office-hour congestion in the plaza district, with vehicles reversing to get through; one newcomer says the traffic was worse than expected. Other recurring points are few usable pavements, a very long trip to the Asian side after work, hours of gridlock on match days and crowds around the metro.
several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: maslak (2023-02 – 2026-05)
- Maslak, Ayazağa
Writers attribute much of the traffic to staff shuttle buses. One driver says they set off from Ayazağa, accidentally entered Maslak and took hours to get back out through side streets. Posts say the metro has not eased congestion and that a collapsed road left closed for a long time made it worse.
a few comments · ekşi sözlük: maslak trafiği (2022-04 – 2025-06)
- Ayazağa
Posts say that on match days drivers cannot leave the car park at the Cendere complex of shops, homes and offices, and vehicles are left in the middle of the road. Office workers say reaching TEM can take over an hour. Public-transport directions involve getting off the M2 at Sanayi and changing at Seyrantepe.
several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: vadistanbul (2023-12 – 2026-06)
- Ayazağa
Posts say the arrival of universities increased the young population in what was once a village-like neighbourhood. They describe entering from the junction of the Kağıthane and Maslak roads, via the descent from Maslak. Writers recall that Ayazağa belonged to Şişli until 2012 and was then said to be Şişli's largest muhtarlık area.
a few comments · ekşi sözlük: ayazağa (2019-09 – 2023-07)
- İstinye, Çayırbaşı
Posts describe a hill on each approach to İstinye from the Bosphorus shore road, from both Emirgan and Yeniköy. They contrast the traditional neighbourhood fabric inland with the more exclusive shore. Çayırbaşı is described similarly; an older post says dense development inland has blocked streets.
a few comments · ekşi sözlük: istinye (2021-06 – 2026-01)
- Emirgan, Baltalimanı
Residents write that pedestrian traffic builds up on the shore road on Sundays, and that spring and summer crowds visiting the grove make the area difficult for locals; winter is preferred. Posts also note older, small rental flats near the museum.
several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: emirgan (2022-02 – 2026-06)
- Rumelihisarı
The neighbourhood is described as having no level ground, only hills and slopes, with dense irregular development; some say even urban renewal is difficult. Posts mention its position directly below the bridge approach, winter winds, university students living alongside long-term residents, and the neighbourhood being split in two during bridge construction.
several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: rumeli hisarüstü (2020-09 – 2026-05)
- Tarabya, Cumhuriyet, Ferahevler
Posts say irregular development and older informal housing begin a little way uphill from the shore, interspersed with luxury gated developments extending towards Tarabyaüstü and Cumhuriyet; building quality around Ferahevler is described as poor. Tarabya Bayırı Street is mentioned as a bus route; writers also note there is no courier depot in the centre and the shore is crowded on summer evenings.
several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: tarabya (2022-05 – 2026-09)
- Zekeriyaköy, Uskumruköy
The area is described as a mix of villas with gardens and gated estates, with access helped by proximity to the airport, Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and the Northern Marmara Motorway. During the February 2025 snowfall, buses reportedly got stuck on hills and blocked roads, leaving the neighbourhood unreachable for hours. Posts also mention new projects bringing more concrete development and an isolated feel, disconnected from the city.
several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: zekeriyaköy (2024-07 – 2026-09)
- Kumköy (Kilyos)
Posts say the main road runs through the small shopping area and remains open to traffic; construction of a tunnel towards Sarıyer and the third-bridge road are said to have brought more activity. There are complaints that shore businesses occupy the coast and that municipal maintenance is inadequate.
a few comments · ekşi sözlük: kilyos (2024-05 – 2025-05)
- Reşitpaşa
Posts say the main street is very winding and parked cars make it difficult to get through, with İETT buses particularly prone to getting stuck. Reşitpaşa is described as an old neighbourhood resistant to change; bus services are said to be very infrequent outside commuting hours.

The moves we see most in Sarıyer
- Moves between the two sides of the city: between Sarıyer and the Asian side; because our lorry has to use Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, the route and departure time matter even more to the day's plan.
- Villa and gated-site moves: garden homes and gated communities in Zekeriyaköy, Uskumruköy, Bahçeköy and Tarabyaüstü; we discuss site rules, vehicle size and garden-gate width during the visit.
- Office and high-rise moves: offices in Maslak and Ayazağa and around Vadistanbul; these require a goods-lift booking and an out-of-hours slot.
- Student and one-person homes (1+1 – one bedroom plus a living room, or a studio): around the universities in Rumeli Hisarüstü, Reşitpaşa and Ayazağa; fewer belongings, a smaller vehicle and a two-person team.
- Family homes (2+1 or 3+1 – two or three bedrooms plus a living room): in older buildings on the Bosphorus hillsides, dismantling, packing and carrying items uphill on hand trolleys are part of the move.
- Urban-renewal clearances and storage: İBB's plan note for Sarıyer covers only Ayazağa, Maslak and Huzur. While buildings are renewed in these neighbourhoods, belongings may need to wait for months; we plan the move and storage together.

Sarıyer Municipality's main service building is at No. 2 Günyüzü Avenue, Pınar neighbourhood. Its call centre is 444 1 722, which is also its WhatsApp number; the email address is info@sariyer.bel.tr. The website's contact form accepts requests by neighbourhood and street; Municipal Police is on the first basement floor and the Cleaning Directorate on the fourth floor (sources: Sarıyer Municipality contact, Municipal Police Directorate, accessed 30.09.2026). The District Governorate is at No. 6 Muhtar Street, Ferahevler neighbourhood; its switchboard is 0 212 223 01 55 (source: Sarıyer District Governorate, accessed 30.09.2026).
Permits for lorries and exterior lifts: the municipality website does not publish a rule or fee for a moving vehicle or mobile lift temporarily using the road (accessed 30.09.2026). The Urban Safety page says traffic officers act against fences, stakes and bollards placed on roads or pavements without permission; putting an obstruction in the street to reserve a loading spot may therefore cause a problem (source: Urban Safety, accessed 30.09.2026). For narrow or dead-end streets, we recommend asking the call centre on 444 1 722 before moving day.
Old furniture, rubble and waste collection days: the municipality books collection of large and small household appliances as electronic waste through 444 1 722. Bulky waste and construction rubble can be taken to the Class I Waste Drop-off Centre at No. 12 Fıstık Çamı Street, Ferahevler neighbourhood; rubble also requires an Excavation Permit Certificate from the Climate Change and Zero Waste Directorate. No separate household-furniture collection address or collection schedule for household and packaging waste is published. The Cleaning Directorate says collection is scheduled to avoid obstructing traffic (sources: Environmental services, Cleaning Directorate, accessed 30.09.2026). We take away the boxes and packing materials on moving day; if old furniture needs to go to the waste centre, we discuss it during the visit.
Public transport
The M2 stations İTÜ-Ayazağa, Atatürk Oto Sanayi, Darüşşafaka and Hacıosman are in Sarıyer; the line operates from 06.00 to 00.00 (source: Metro İstanbul M2, accessed 30.09.2026). İBB's station layer also places Sanayi Mahallesi and Seyrantepe within Huzur neighbourhood (source: İBB Open Data – Rail System Station Points, accessed 30.09.2026). From the M6 terminus at Rumelihisarı, the F4 funicular descends to the shore at Aşiyan (sources: M6, F4, accessed 30.09.2026). There is no metro in the centre, along the shore or around Kilyos; we could not verify the M11 station or services from the district's ferry piers. Residents describe peak-time crowds around Maslak; we load outside the busiest hours.

Urban renewal
İBB's Sarıyer plan-note amendment covers only three neighbourhoods: Ayazağa, Maslak and Huzur. Clause nine of the additional plan note excludes coastal areas, forest and the Bosphorus shore and fore-view zones, so the Bosphorus-side neighbourhoods are not covered through this route (sources: Sarıyer plan-note amendment, Additional plan note, accessed 30.09.2026). The municipality has no separate Urban Renewal Directorate; work is handled by the Zoning and Urban Planning and Building Control directorates. At the September 2026 council meeting, it was reported that even licensed buildings could not be renewed because of planning issues (source: September council meeting, accessed 30.09.2026). As a result, older housing on the shore remains in place for longer; for us, that means continuing to carry items through narrow stairways in buildings with small lifts. For clearances in Ayazağa, Maslak and Huzur, we pack belongings into storage and deliver them in one go when the building is ready.
Neighbouring districts
To the south are Beşiktaş, Şişli and Kağıthane; to the west is Eyüpsultan. We plan the streets, slopes, floors and lorry route for both addresses together. For the whole city, see our İstanbul removals page.
