Güngören removals

Three things shape the move-day plan in Güngören: the wholesale vehicles residents say block roads to unload in Merter; demolition and construction traffic continuing in Tozkoparan; and the lack of parking in the other neighbourhoods in the evenings. For a move between İstanbul's two sides, the lorry's bridge route matters too.

We work in Güngören, north of the E-5, where many apartment blocks occupy a small area. The District Governorate gives its area as 839 hectares (8.4 km²); elevation ranges from 19 metres in Merter to 78 metres on the Gençosman ridge. The district borders Bahçelievler, Bakırköy, Zeytinburnu, Esenler and Bağcılar, and has no coastline. It has 11 mahalle (neighbourhoods); Merter is not a neighbourhood but the local name for the Mehmet Nesih Özmen and Sanayi area. The district has 751 streets and avenues, totalling approximately 172.8 km (sources: Geographic information, Administrative information, Infrastructure, accessed 30.09.2026).

The car-route distance from our base in Sancaktepe to Güngören is approximately 39–43 km: Merter by the E-5 is the nearest point at 39.4 km, the district's centre of gravity is 40.9 km away, and Güneştepe is 43.2 km away. In free-flowing traffic, the same profile gives an estimated 35–40 minutes; an early-morning departure is likely to stay close to that range (source: OSRM / OpenStreetMap, September 2026). These figures are for a car using Fatih Sultan Mehmet or 15 Temmuz Şehitler Bridge. Our lorry uses Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, so its route is longer; we do not give a separate lorry distance or journey time.

Crossing the Bosphorus: which bridge takes the lorry

For a move between İstanbul's two sides, the route depends on the vehicle class. According to KGM, lorries cannot use Fatih Sultan Mehmet or 15 Temmuz Şehitler bridges; Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge is open to all vehicle classes. The Eurasia Tunnel toll table has no lorry class (sources: KGM, Eurasia Tunnel, accessed 30.09.2026). The lorry travels around the north and approaches the district via Otogar or the E-5; we choose the approach point to suit the loading time (source: Transport, accessed 30.09.2026).

Güngören map: neighbourhoods, muhtarlık offices, stations

The map shows the boundaries of 11 neighbourhoods, muhtarlık offices, M1A and T1 stops, and taxi ranks. In satellite view, Merter's business blocks, Tozkoparan's low-rise blocks and the dense apartment fabric of Gençosman and Güneştepe are easy to distinguish.

Access profile, neighbourhood by neighbourhood

The categories are relative to Güngören's own 11 neighbourhoods. Street, building and parking data comes from the OSM extract dated 28.09.2026; gradients were calculated from Copernicus DEM GLO-30. Average gradients exceed 6% in six neighbourhoods; street width and parking are the main factors for a move.

Computed on 2026-09-30 from OpenStreetMap streets, parking areas and buildings inside each neighbourhood; categories are relative to the other neighbourhoods of this district. Narrow = share of local street length that is one-way, under 5.5 m wide or single-lane. Slope = average street grade from the Copernicus DEM (30 m surface model; indicative). * station under construction (İBB).

Here is how to read the figures for moving day:

  • Merter's wholesale area — Mehmet Nesih Özmen and Sanayi: the share of narrow or one-way streets is 15% and 10% respectively; the first is the highest in the district. In Sanayi, 52% of streets are steep and the average gradient is 7.3%; in Mehmet Nesih Özmen, the figures are 41% and 6.2%. Sanayi has 1,211 buildings, an average of 5.3 storeys where known, and no mapped parking areas. Mehmet Nesih Özmen has 882 buildings, 4.3 storeys on average and nine parking areas. Residents describe daytime unloading traffic, so delivery times for shop and warehouse moves need to be agreed in advance.
  • Hilly inner neighbourhoods — Güven, Merkez and Gençosman: average gradients are 7.8%, 7.3% and 7.1%; 44–47% of streets are steep. Gençosman leads the district with 23.7 km of local streets and 13 parking areas; its 1,287 buildings average 5 storeys where known, and 10% of its streets are narrow or one-way. Merkez has 1,498 buildings and one parking area; residents say Köyiçi is busy on weekend days. Güven has 629 buildings in 0.3 km², an average of 6 storeys where known, and no mapped parking. On a slope, we agree in advance where the lorry can stop and where an exterior lift can be set up, including which side of the road is suitable.
  • Flatter, two-way streets with little space between buildings — Haznedar, Mareşal Çakmak and Akıncılar: average gradients are 4.7%, 4.8% and 5.6%; 29–34% of streets are steep. No streets in Haznedar are classed as narrow or one-way; the share is 1% in each of the other two. Average storey counts where known are 6.2, 5.9 and 5.8; Haznedar is the highest in the district. Mareşal Çakmak has 1,076 buildings in 0.37 km², while the smallest neighbourhood, Akıncılar, has 689 buildings in 0.26 km². Haznedar is the only one with a mapped parking area. Even when the lorry can reach the door, a parking space needs to be arranged in advance.
  • Güneştepe: none of its streets are classed as one-way or narrow, but the average gradient is 6.3% and 46% of streets are steep. It has the district's most buildings, 1,632, with an average of 5.4 storeys where known, 20.1 km of local streets and no mapped parking. The streets are wide but hilly, so the lorry can reach the door; we adjust the team size to the floor and slope.
  • The E-5 edge and renewal area — Tozkoparan and Abdurrahman Nafiz Gürman: these are the least densely built neighbourhoods, with 506 and 500 buildings. Tozkoparan has the district's lowest average storey count where known, at 3.5; residents describe low-rise blocks with gardens. 8% of its streets are narrow or one-way, its average gradient is 5.1%, and it has five parking areas. In Abdurrahman Nafiz Gürman, the corresponding figures are 3%, 5.3% and five; the average storey count where known is 5.5, and M1A Merter station is here. As residents move from old blocks into new ones in Tozkoparan, we confirm construction-site routes in advance.

Merter textiles and Tozkoparan renewal

According to the District Governorate, textiles, trade and services are prominent in the district; Merter's industry increases the daytime population. The municipality's history describes Merter as a textile centre since the 1980s (sources: Economic profile, Population, Municipal history, accessed 30.09.2026). Residents say the streets fill up at the start of the season; for shop and warehouse moves in Merter, a weekend morning or a time before business hours may be more suitable.

Urban renewal (kentsel dönüşüm, the renewal of earthquake-risk buildings) in Tozkoparan is proceeding in phases. According to a municipality news item dated 24.03.2026, 798 independent units had been handed over to their owners, foundations had been laid for 1,132 units, and delivery of all 1,930 units was targeted by summer 2027. Project pages show that Phase 2, Part 2 was completed in 2023 and Phase 4, Part 1 began in October 2025 (sources: Major renewal in Güngören, Projects, accessed 30.09.2026). Parcel-based renewal also extends across the district: September 2026 notices repeatedly announced share sales under Law No. 6306 for parcels in Haznedar, Güven, Gençosman and Merkez. Following identification of a risky building, the demolition period is no shorter than 60 days (sources: Notices, Risky-building procedures, accessed 30.09.2026). İBB conducted a survey in Sanayi Mahallesi in 2021, covering Sanayi and Merkez; we found no record of a district-specific İBB project, reserve area or field office (sources: Sanayi Mahallesi survey, Planning-note amendment, accessed 30.09.2026). We pack belongings from a vacated block, store them and move everything in one go when the new flat is ready.

What residents say

Summaries of public community discussions, in our own words, with links to the source. These are residents' views, not our crew's notes; we add our own observations as we complete jobs here.

  • Haznedar, Güven, Merkez

In 2026, residents describe concrete mixers, cranes or excavators on almost every street. They say renewal demolitions are concentrated around the municipality and in Haznedar, and that dust kept them from opening windows through the summer. One visitor adds that closed and altered streets confused navigation; the district's small area is also often mentioned.

  • Merkez, Gençosman, Güneştepe

Residents say there is nowhere to park, and that shopkeepers reserve vacant spaces with chairs and cones. Even someone exploring the streets on a map describes narrow roads, cars on pavements and congested traffic. One resident says demolition follows the identification of a risky building within a few months, leaving vacant plots on almost every street; another says the tram has attracted many newcomers to the district.

  • Merkez, Güven, Akıncılar

Former residents describe the district as a central place with metro and tram connections everywhere, but agree that parking is its biggest problem. One visitor says traffic and crowds persist on weekdays and weekends, making life difficult for car owners. Posts also note that the district is almost entirely apartment blocks and smaller than some neighbourhoods in neighbouring districts.

  • Mehmet Nesih Özmen, Sanayi

Merter residents say vehicles block roads while unloading in the textile wholesale area, couriers appear from every direction and noise levels are high. Older posts describe how difficult it is to stop by the road, with shopkeepers warning drivers or tow trucks arriving. Posts also mention some relief when wholesalers closed in 2025 and residences built on a former lorry parking area.

  • Haznedar

Posts describe construction everywhere because of urban renewal, with no parking spaces or buildings with car parks, only blocks of flats. The area is described as a short walk from the Metrobus stop residents call Ömür and from the Bağcılar minibus. Most buildings are older with mosaic façades; the main street has bakeries, cafés and shops.

  • Tozkoparan

Residents describe the neighbourhood between Merter and Davutpaşa on the M1 line as a place of low-rise blocks with gardens, large trees and a continuing sense of community. Since it was declared a risky area, it has often featured in reports of sealing, evacuation and demolition; the buildings are acknowledged to be old and poorly maintained.

  • Tozkoparan

When renewal began, residents wrote that notices posted on building doors required them to leave within a month, warning that electricity and gas would otherwise be cut. Around 15,000 people were estimated to be affected. One commuter says they were surprised by the homes with gardens and leafy streets with large trees.

  • Mehmet Nesih Özmen, Abdurrahman Nafiz Gürman

Residents say the E-5 entrance from Bahçelievler narrows to one lane where it meets the side road, and that the side road remains one lane between İncirli and Merter, where minibuses and buses build up. Older posts also mention flooding in Merter during rain.

  • Abdurrahman Nafiz Gürman, Mehmet Nesih Özmen

Posts say the stop can only be reached by stairs, with no escalator or lift. Uneven platform steps and a narrow, single-file passage make access difficult for older people, passengers with pushchairs and disabled travellers.

The moves we see most in Güngören

  • Urban-renewal clearances and storage: block-level work in Tozkoparan and parcel-level work in Haznedar, Güven, Gençosman and Merkez; belongings may need to wait until the new building is ready, so we can plan the move and storage together.
  • Moves between İstanbul's two sides: between the Asian side and Güngören; the lorry's route via Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and its approach via the E-5 or Otogar shape the day's plan.
  • Shops, offices and warehouses — Merter: shelving, shop fittings and stock in textile and wholesale business blocks; moves are planned outside goods-receiving hours, often on a weekend morning.
  • Single-person and student homes (1+1, studios): near Merter Metro and the tram; a 1+1 means one bedroom and a living room. We plan a smaller vehicle, a two-person team and an early start.
  • Family homes (2+1, 3+1): in the dense apartment areas of Güneştepe, Merkez and Gençosman, dismantling, packing and arranging a stopping place on the slope are part of the plan. A 2+1 has two bedrooms and a living room; a 3+1 has three bedrooms and a living room.

Güngören Municipality's main building is at No. 38 Marmara Avenue, Güven neighbourhood; the switchboard is (0212) 449 55 00. Requests and complaints can be submitted through a web ticket at the Solution Desk, a digital form or the "Güngören Yanında" mobile app; no WhatsApp line or 444-number helpline is published on the website. The same switchboard connects callers to Municipal Police and Environmental Protection and Control. The latter's field office is at No. 1 Ferah Street, Sanayi neighbourhood (sources: Municipality contact, Organisation chart, accessed 30.09.2026). The District Governorate is at No. 34–36 Gaziosmanpaşa Avenue, Merkez neighbourhood, telephone (0212) 506 63 64 (source: District Governorate contact, accessed 30.09.2026).

Permits for lorries and exterior lifts: we could not find a published rule or fee on the municipality's website for a moving lorry or mobile lift temporarily using the road (accessed 30.09.2026). The site has no Municipal Police page, and its four "Circulars and Regulations" documents do not include municipal orders and prohibitions. In narrow or one-way streets, it is safest to ask Municipal Police via the switchboard a day before the move. In 2026, the municipality announced six covered car parks beneath schools and parks, with capacity for 1,550 vehicles, in response to residents' evening parking needs; official pages also acknowledge the parking shortage (source: Güngören gets modern car parks, accessed 30.09.2026).

Old furniture, rubble and waste collection days: we could not find a published municipal page for household or packaging-waste collection days, rubble drop-off or collection of old furniture (accessed 30.09.2026). The organisation chart does not show a department called Cleaning Affairs, so this should be confirmed with the switchboard. We collect the boxes and packing materials left after a move; we plan separately for old furniture and renovation rubble during the site visit.

Public transport

Merter is the district's only station on the M1A Yenikapı–Atatürk Airport metro line. The elevated station connects with the Metrobus, and the line runs from 06.00 to 24.00 (source: Metro İstanbul M1A, accessed 30.09.2026). The T1 Kabataş–Bağcılar tram runs at street level along Mehmet Akif and Abdi İpekçi avenues. Merter Tekstil Merkezi, Güngören, Akıncılar and Güneştepe stops take their names from local areas; at peak times, trams run every two minutes (source: Metro İstanbul T1, accessed 30.09.2026). The tracks and platforms on these two avenues restrict where a lorry can turn or stop, so loading takes place on a side street. The southern extension of the M3 Bakırköy–Kayaşehir line, opened in 2024, has stations named Haznedar and İlkyuva. The İBB station layer does not place them within Güngören's boundary, so they are not shown on our map; however, they are likely to be the nearest metro entrances for people moving to the Haznedar area (source: Metro İstanbul M3, accessed 30.09.2026). Official pages confirm a Metrobus connection only at Merter.
