Bakırköy removals

In Bakırköy, we plan as if there were three different districts: Ataköy high-rise blocks with building-management rules, the one-way old market streets of Cevizlik–Sakızağacı–Yenimahalle, and the garden villas of Yeşilköy–Florya. For all of them, a move between İstanbul's two sides raises the question of which bridge the lorry can use.

We work in Bakırköy, a district on the Sea of Marmara. The District Governorate lists 15 neighbourhoods and a population of approximately 218,000, without specifying a year; it puts the daytime population at around one million. Cevizlik, Yenimahalle and Sakızağacı are described as older settlements; the Ataköy developments as planned examples dating from after 1960; and Yeşilköy–Yeşilyurt–Şenlikköy as an area of villas. It also notes a high proportion of older buildings (source: Bakırköy District Governorate, accessed 30.09.2026). As no area or neighbouring-district figures are published, we calculated them from the map: the 15 neighbourhood polygons total approximately 29.7 km², of which 12.4 km² is Yeşilköy, including the former Atatürk Airport. Bakırköy borders Zeytinburnu to the east, Güngören and Bahçelievler to the north, and Küçükçekmece to the west.

By car, the distance from our Sancaktepe base to Bakırköy is approximately 37–46 km: 37.5 km to the Zeytinburnu boundary, 44.5 km to the district's centre of gravity and 45.8 km to Florya. A free-flow drive using the same car profile takes 35–45 minutes; an early-morning departure may be close to this range (source: OSRM / OpenStreetMap, September 2026). This estimate is for a car using either the 15 Temmuz Şehitler or Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. Our lorry uses Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, making the journey longer; we do not give a lorry travel-time estimate.

Crossing the Bosphorus: which bridge takes the lorry

For a move from İstanbul's Asian side to Bakırköy, the first decision is based on vehicle class. The General Directorate of Highways' restrictions page lists the 15 Temmuz Şehitler and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges as closed to lorries; Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge is open to all classes. The Eurasia Tunnel toll table lists cars, minibuses and motorcycles, but no lorry fare (sources: KGM restrictions, Eurasia Tunnel tolls, accessed 30.09.2026). In practice, the lorry takes the northern route and enters the district from TEM or D-100; the District Governorate's transport page also says E-5 and TEM pass through the district. For smaller moves, we confirm by phone which crossings are permitted for the vehicle class. The chosen route goes into the day plan during the site visit.

Bakırköy map: neighbourhoods, muhtarlık offices, stations

The map shows the boundaries of all 15 neighbourhoods, muhtarlık offices, seven Marmaray stations from Ataköy to Florya, M1A, M3 and M9 stations, and taxi ranks. In satellite view, Ataköy's widely spaced blocks, the compact plots in Cevizlik and Yenimahalle, and Yeşilköy's garden plots and airport open space are easy to distinguish.

Access profile, neighbourhood by neighbourhood

The categories are relative to Bakırköy's own 15 neighbourhoods. Street, building and parking data comes from the OSM snapshot dated 28.09.2026; gradients were calculated from Copernicus DEM GLO-30. No neighbourhood has an average gradient of 6% or more. The main differences are street width, building age and mapped parking.

Computed on 2026-09-30 from OpenStreetMap streets, parking areas and buildings inside each neighbourhood; categories are relative to the other neighbourhoods of this district. Narrow = share of local street length that is one-way, under 5.5 m wide or single-lane. Slope = average street grade from the Copernicus DEM (30 m surface model; indicative). * station under construction (İBB).

The profile shows four distinct patterns:

  • Ataköy developments — 1. Kısım, 2-5-6. Kısım, 3-4-11. Kısım and 7-8-9-10. Kısım: average gradients are 2.3–3.8%, with 8–19% of streets classed as steep, making this the flattest part of the district. 11–38% of streets are one-way or narrow; roads within the developments are wide, but cars park in front of the blocks. Buildings with known floor data average 10.2 storeys in 2-5-6. Kısım, 10.4 in 7-8-9-10. Kısım, 6.1 in 1. Kısım and 5.2 in 3-4-11. Kısım. 7-8-9-10. Kısım has 67 mapped parking areas, second only to Yeşilköy in the district. Here, building management matters more than the street: we agree the lift booking, goods-lift dimensions, how long the lorry can wait outside the block and the entry pass in advance, and account for the parking congestion residents describe.
  • Old market streets — Cevizlik, Sakızağacı, Yenimahalle and Zeytinlik: each neighbourhood is under 0.4 km², but building counts are high (659 in Cevizlik, 521 in Zeytinlik, 481 in Sakızağacı and 408 in Yenimahalle). 61–88% of streets are one-way or narrow; average gradients are 4.7–5.6%, with 29–41% of streets steep, among the highest in the district. Each has only one or two mapped parking areas. Floor data is sparse or unavailable, so we check storey count during the site visit. The lorry may not fit on most streets; our standard plan for this group is a smaller vehicle, transferring belongings from the end of the street and starting before 07.00.
  • Behind the centre — Kartaltepe, Osmaniye and Zuhuratbaba: 33–55% of streets are one-way or narrow, average gradients are 4.1–5.4%, and 22–32% are steep. Kartaltepe has 983 buildings, behind only Yeşilköy and Şenlikköy, and the centre's longest local street network at 19.2 km; floor data is sparse. Osmaniye has the municipal building and İncirli and Bakırköy metro stations, as well as 20 mapped parking areas; Zuhuratbaba has 15. Around İncirli Avenue and Özgürlük Square, the issue is not hills but one-way streets and the courthouse and hospital traffic residents describe; we keep loading away from these routes.
  • Western and villa belt — Yeşilköy, Yeşilyurt, Şenlikköy and Basınköy: average gradients are 3.5–4.3%, with 16–25% of streets steep. Yeşilköy is the district's largest neighbourhood at 12.4 km², with 27.4 km of local streets, 1,505 buildings and 85 mapped parking areas, the most in the district; buildings with known floor data average 1.4 storeys. Şenlikköy has 1,345 buildings and the second-longest local street network at 24.8 km. Yeşilyurt and Basınköy have one and five mapped parking areas respectively, and floor data is sparse in all three. 15–59% of streets are one-way or narrow; Yeşilköy is at the high end, with one-way streets concentrated around the coast and stations. At villas, belongings often leave through the garden gate without an exterior lift. Street-renewal works listed by the municipality on Kuşkonmaz and Seyit Ali streets may cause temporary closures, so we confirm the route a day ahead.

What residents say

Summaries of public community discussions, in our own words, with links to the source. These are residents' views, not our crew's notes; we add our own observations as we complete jobs here.

  • Ataköy 2-5-6. Kısım, Ataköy 7-8-9-10. Kısım

Residents say most Ataköy blocks, apart from the new towers by the coast, are over 50 years old and built with shear walls. As cafés and restaurants replace long-standing shops in the Fifth Section market, parking has become more difficult and finding room for a lorry outside a block is not easy.

several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: ataköy (2025)

  • Ataköy 2-5-6. Kısım

Residents mention blocks around the Sixth Section that were ordered to be demolished after concrete-core tests, concerns about the area's ground conditions in an earthquake, and unease about the flow of short-term rental guests through the blocks.

a few comments · ekşi sözlük: ataköy (2024–2025)

  • Cevizlik, Zeytinlik, Sakızağacı, Zuhuratbaba

Residents in the centre say contractors have made more approaches following the municipality's new planning rules and extra-storey allowance, appointments are harder to get, and they expect the district to become a construction site like Kadıköy. An engineer writes that neighbouring Zeytinburnu has been undergoing renewal for two years and Bakırköy is behind; people question whether the infrastructure can handle the extra density.

several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: bakırköy (2025-11)

  • Cevizlik, Zeytinlik, Sakızağacı

Residents say buildings in the centre were demolished one after another over the summer; one noticed that their former primary school had also disappeared. They add that the coast fills with people having breakfast and running at weekends, and remains busy despite its older İstanbul character.

    a few comments · ekşi sözlük: bakırköy (2026-05 – 2026-08)

  • Şenlikköy

A driver writes that a road collapsed outside the petrol station opposite the railway station and remained unrepaired for weeks, diverting traffic towards Menekşe and Küçükçekmece through Şenlikköy's residential streets.

single opinion · ekşi sözlük: florya (2025-04)

  • Zuhuratbaba, Kartaltepe

Residents say one-way signs on İncirli Avenue make it difficult to get home. They describe the avenue as the main entrance to the courthouse, Sadi Konuk Hospital and Özgürlük Square.

single opinion · ekşi sözlük: incirli (2021–2024)

  • Zuhuratbaba, Osmaniye, Cevizlik

Residents say bus stops were temporarily moved to İncirli during metro excavation, roads opening onto the square brought the avenue to a standstill for two weeks, and cars double-parked outside businesses.

  • Kartaltepe, Osmaniye

Residents describe Kartaltepe and Osmaniye, behind the coast, as mostly low-rise, with more high-rise developments appearing over the past decade. A 2026 post calls Kartaltepe the district's most populous neighbourhood.

a few comments · ekşi sözlük: kartaltepe (2020–2026)

  • Zuhuratbaba

A former resident returning after two years says open green spaces have filled with large buildings; the post also notes the courthouse, shrine and park near İncirli Avenue. For moving, loading is planned at the development entrance for new high-rises and at the front door on older streets.

single opinion · ekşi sözlük: zuhuratbaba (2018–2021)

  • Yeşilköy

Residents say the coast is hard to reach at weekends, attracts large crowds in summer and leaves the neighbourhood quiet in winter.

    a few comments · ekşi sözlük: yeşilköy (2026-07 – 2026-09)

  • Şenlikköy

Residents say demand for luxury homes and villas drove Şenlikköy's growth from the 1980s, leaving few villa plots by the 2000s. They consider it the centre of Florya.

single opinion · ekşi sözlük: şenlikköy (2021)

  • Cevizlik

Residents describe Cevizlik by the bus stop closest to the sea-bus pier and the taxi queue outside it. Older posts name it, alongside Sakızağacı and Zeytinlik, as one of the district's oldest neighbourhoods.

Urban renewal: plan notes and moves residents describe

The İBB urban-renewal website has one entry for Bakırköy: a planning-note amendment for buildings at risk based on the 2003 Bakırköy Centre–Ataköy revised plan and the 2005 Florya and surrounding-area plan, covering all 15 neighbourhoods. The list has no district-specific project, reserve area or settlement office (source: Bakırköy planning note amendment for buildings at risk, accessed 30.09.2026). The municipality displayed its revised 1:1,000 development plan for the areas north and south of the railway in Bakırköy Centre, approved on 24.07.2026, from 07.08 to 06.09.2026. The report and maps are PDFs; we have not reviewed their contents and do not draw conclusions from them (source: Municipal planning notice, accessed 30.09.2026). Residents' accounts of increased contractor interest following additional-floor permissions and title deeds for roof spaces are not official information and are presented separately as community observations. Demolition in the centre may mean sharing a street with construction lorries; in Ataköy, residents also describe evacuations after concrete-core tests. Belongings from a building at risk can be packed and stored until the new building is ready. İBB's Urban Renewal Desk is in the Bakırköy service building in Osmaniye.

The moves we see most in Bakırköy

  • Moves between İstanbul's two sides: in either direction between the Asian side and Bakırköy; the lorry's route via Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge is central to the day's plan.
  • Moves within Ataköy developments: moving between blocks, an evacuation after concrete-core testing or moving to another section; we arrange lift and time slots with management and confirm the waiting rules outside the block.
  • Villas and homes with gardens — Yeşilköy, Yeşilyurt and Florya: larger volumes, garden furniture and stored belongings often mean planning for two vehicles.
  • Single-person and studio flats (1+1): in the centre and near metro stations; a smaller vehicle, a two-person team and an early start. A 1+1 means one bedroom and a living room.
  • Family homes (2+1, 3+1): dismantling, packing and a transfer point on the old market streets are part of the plan. A 2+1 has two bedrooms and a living room; a 3+1 has three bedrooms and a living room.
  • Offices and shops: the World Trade Centre, the free-zone area, the cluster of shopping centres and bank branches in the centre; moves may need to take place outside business hours.
  • Urban-renewal clearances and storage: belongings may need to stay in storage for months while a building is renewed; we plan the move and storage together.

Bakırköy Municipality's service building is at No. 8 İsmail Erez Boulevard, Osmaniye neighbourhood. Its switchboard is (0212) 414 97 00, the public help desk is (0212) 414 97 77 (press 1), and its WhatsApp line for photo reports is 0552 912 73 36. Directorates do not have separate pages; according to the municipality's extension list, call the switchboard and ask for Municipal Police on 8301, Cleaning Affairs on 8506, Urban Renewal on 3006 or Transport on 8505 (sources: Municipality contact, WhatsApp contact line, Directorate extensions, accessed 30.09.2026).

Permits for lorries and exterior lifts: we could not find a published rule or fee on the municipality's website for temporarily using the road with a moving vehicle or mobile lift; the services menu also has no separate Municipal Police page (accessed 30.09.2026). In Ataköy, building-management rules apply; on the old market streets, the Municipal Police extension (8301) is the place to ask a day ahead.

Old furniture, rubble and waste collection days: we could not find a published page on household or packaging waste collection days, rubble disposal or collection of old furniture on the municipality's website (accessed 30.09.2026). Ask Cleaning Affairs on extension 8506 or through the public help desk. We take away boxes and packing materials after the move; we discuss what to do with old belongings during the site visit.

Public transport

Bakırköy has several rail options. Marmaray runs along the coast through the district, with stations at Ataköy, Bakırköy, Yenimahalle, Yeşilköy, Yeşilyurt, Florya and Florya Akvaryum. M1A's Bakırköy–İncirli station is underground; Ataköy–Şirinevler and Yenibosna are at ground level, DTM is on a viaduct and Atatürk Airport station is underground. The line runs from 06.00 to 00.00; İncirli connects with M3 and Metrobus, Ataköy–Şirinevler with Metrobus, and Yenibosna with M9 and Metrobus (source: Metro İstanbul M1A, accessed 30.09.2026). M3's southern extension reached Bakırköy Sahil on 10.03.2024; Bakırköy Sahil, Özgürlük Meydanı and İncirli stations are all underground, and Özgürlük Meydanı connects with Marmaray (source: Metro İstanbul M3, accessed 30.09.2026). The Ataköy–Bahariye section of M9 opened on 18.03.2024; it connects with Marmaray at Ataköy and M1A at Yenibosna (source: Metro İstanbul M9, accessed 30.09.2026). The İBB station layer still marks the M3 coastal section and M9's Ataköy terminus as under construction; where that label appears in the list below, Metro İstanbul's service information is current. The District Governorate says there is a sea-bus pier beside Ataköy Marina, but we could not verify routes or timetables with the operator. On moving day, loading around Özgürlük Square, İncirli and Ataköy–Şirinevler is difficult during the morning and evening peaks; we do not stop in front of stations.
