Bayrampaşa removals
In Bayrampaşa, the lorry challenge is not the slope but plots as small as 100 square metres and maze-like one-way streets: the dense fabric of Yıldırım and Kartaltepe, basement workshops residents describe in Terazidere, and the demolition under way in the İsmetpaşa reserve area.
Bayrampaşa's present-day streetscape has its roots in the district's industrial past. The District Governorate says the town was designated an industrial area after 1955 and small workshops settled on flat, inexpensive land. Shared plots shrank from 250 to 100 square metres; as the gaps filled, Yıldırım, Kartaltepe and Muratpaşa grew. The name changed from Sağmalcılar to Bayrampaşa in 1978 (sources: History, About, accessed 30.09.2026). The District Governorate lists 11 neighbourhoods. Its geography page places the district about 3 km from the city centre, gives an approximate population of 270,000 and names Zeytinburnu to the south, Eyüpsultan and Gaziosmanpaşa to the east, and Esenler to the west (sources: Local Authorities, Geography, accessed 30.09.2026). Our map polygons show Kocatepe as the largest neighbourhood at 1.7 km² and Vatan as the smallest at 0.23 km²; official pages do not state the district's area.
The car-profile road distance from our Sancaktepe base to Bayrampaşa is about 37–42 km: 37 km to Sağmalcılar, 39 km to the district's centre of gravity and 42 km around Karadeniz stop in Cevatpaşa. In free-flowing traffic, this profile takes 30–35 minutes; an early-morning departure is likely to be close to that estimate (source: OSRM / OpenStreetMap, September 2026). The car route crosses the Bosphorus via either the 15 July Martyrs or Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge; our lorry has to use Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, so the actual route is longer.
Crossing the Bosphorus: which bridge takes the lorry
From the Asian side, Bayrampaşa looks close on the map but is a long way round for a lorry. The General Directorate of Highways restrictions list bars lorries and buses from 15 July Martyrs and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges; Yavuz Sultan Selim is the only Bosphorus bridge open to every motor vehicle class. The Eurasia Tunnel tariff lists cars, minibuses and motorcycles only, with no lorry class (sources: KGM restrictions and prohibitions, Eurasia Tunnel tolls, accessed 30.09.2026). Our team therefore travels north, crosses via Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and enters Bayrampaşa from TEM. The motorway exit is close, but the one-way street network starts immediately afterwards. We agree the lorry's approach and stopping point during the site visit.
Bayrampaşa map: neighbourhoods, muhtarlık offices, stations
The map shows the boundaries of all 11 neighbourhoods, muhtarlık offices, M1 and T4 stops within the district, and taxi ranks. In satellite view, the broad plots in Kocatepe and Altıntepsi stand out from the dense Yıldırım–Kartaltepe–Muratpaşa triangle.
Access profile, neighbourhood by neighbourhood
These categories compare Bayrampaşa's 11 neighbourhoods with one another; overall, the district is dense and moderately sloping. A neighbourhood called hilly here would be considered moderate by Üsküdar standards. The map has too little floor data in every neighbourhood – at most 3% of buildings have it – so we check building height and lift access during the visit. The main differences are the share of one-way or narrow streets, building count and mapped car parks.

Computed on 2026-09-30 from OpenStreetMap streets, parking areas and buildings inside each neighbourhood; categories are relative to the other neighbourhoods of this district. Narrow = share of local street length that is one-way, under 5.5 m wide or single-lane. Slope = average street grade from the Copernicus DEM (30 m surface model; indicative). * station under construction (İBB).
Here is what the figures mean on moving day:
- The narrowest, flattest pair around the metro – İsmet Paşa and Cevatpaşa: 87–88% of streets are one-way or narrow, the district's highest share, while average gradients are 4.4–4.9% and the steep-street share 27–29%, the district's lowest. These are also the neighbourhoods with the fewest buildings, 836 and 726, and one mapped car park each. İsmet Paşa has Sağmalcılar metro station and the reserve area being demolished; Cevatpaşa has Karadeniz and Taşköprü T4 stops. A lorry can enter but may block the street, so notifying neighbours and agreeing a short loading window are part of the plan.
- Busy inner neighbourhoods – Yıldırım and Muratpaşa: these have the district's longest local street networks, 25 km and 19.6 km, and 2,600 and 2,485 buildings. 56–71% of streets are one-way or narrow; average gradients are 5–5.2%, with 31–35% of streets steep. There are eight mapped car parks in Yıldırım and six in Muratpaşa. Residents say cars park on the pavement along Kosova Avenue and that half-basements are used as flats. During the visit, we check stair dimensions and team size for belongings leaving a basement.
- The hilly trio – Kartaltepe, Terazidere and Vatan: average gradients are 6.6–7%, with 51–57% of streets steep, the district's highest shares. The street pattern differs: 63% of Kartaltepe's streets are one-way or narrow, compared with only 6% in Terazidere and Vatan. Kartaltepe has 2,771 buildings, the district's highest count, and two mapped car parks; Terazidere has 1,456 buildings and Vatan 996, with no mapped car parks in either. Residents describe basement sock and textile workshops and Demirciler industrial estate alongside the sloping streets in the profile; we agree out-of-hours work and where the lorry can stop on the slope in advance.
- The broad-plot, car-park-rich north – Kocatepe and Altıntepsi: Kocatepe is the district's largest neighbourhood at 1.7 km², followed by Altıntepsi at 1.3 km². They also have the most mapped car parks, 14 and 19 respectively. 64% of Kocatepe's streets are one-way or narrow, compared with 23% in Altıntepsi; average gradients are 5.5–5.9%, with 33–39% of streets steep. They have 1,181 and 1,826 buildings. Kocatepe has the M1 station of the same name; residents say Forum İstanbul is also here. Altıntepsi has the M1 Otogar station. Community discussions often mention weekend queues around the shopping centre, so we recommend a weekday morning for nearby moves.
- The centre and municipal area – Yenidoğan and Orta: both cover 0.8 km²; 34–42% of streets are one-way or narrow, average gradients are 4.9–5.2%, and 33–36% of streets are steep. They have 1,421 and 1,303 buildings. Four car parks are mapped in Yenidoğan and one in Orta. The municipal building and the commercial corridor mentioned in the District Governorate's history are in Yenidoğan; for addresses on the main road, we start loading before 07.00.
İsmetpaşa reserve area: demolition, clearance and temporary homes
The most visible urban-renewal project in Bayrampaşa is the area scheme in İsmetpaşa. İBB's project page says the İstanbul Earthquake Master Plan classified 30.76% of the district's building stock, or 19,973 buildings, as at risk. The first phase of 2,269 homes on the former prison site was completed on 16.08.2019; moving began on 22.06.2020, and at least one covered parking space was allocated to each independent unit (source: Bayrampaşa Former Prison Site Urban Renewal Project, accessed 30.09.2026). Demolition continues in the second phase, the 7.67-hectare İsmetpaşa reserve area; a final project for 546 flats in Orta Alan is ready (source: İsmetpaşa neighbourhood reserve area, accessed 30.09.2026). For eligible rights-holders who have reached an agreement, 162 independent units have been allocated as temporary homes; one condition is that the existing unit has been vacated. Applications are made at the Reconciliation Office, No. 59 Tuna Avenue, İsmet Paşa neighbourhood, telephone 0212 449 91 43 (sources: Temporary housing allocation, Information and Reconciliation Office, accessed 30.09.2026). Our part is straightforward: we pack belongings from a flat with a confirmed clearance date into storage, set aside and deliver what is needed at the temporary home, then move everything into the new block in one go. We check the covered car-park entrance height before delivery.
What residents say
Summaries of public community discussions, in our own words, with links to the source. These are residents' views, not our crew's notes; we add our own observations as we complete jobs here.
- Muratpaşa, Yenidoğan
Residents say İspark spaces in the centre fill up, drivers search for parking nearby for a long time and cars end up on the pavement. Posts also say pedestrians have little room left on the pavement along Kosova Avenue in Muratpaşa. The same discussion names five metro stops as a transport advantage and notes that textile shops in the centre are beginning to close.

- Yıldırım
Posts list urban renewal, car parking and green space as the most urgent needs in the inner neighbourhoods with narrow streets. Turning the former amusement-park site in Yıldırım into a park is welcomed. Writers criticise the use of half-basements as flats and the concentration of garment workshops and carpentry shops among homes.

- Yıldırım, Muratpaşa, Kartaltepe
The streets are described as very narrow and maze-like. Posts say no-left-turn rules and oncoming vehicles can bring single-lane one-way streets to a standstill, while municipal roadworks make it harder to leave the district. Several entries repeat the comparison to a concrete maze.
a few comments · ekşi sözlük: bayrampaşa (2020-11 – 2022-03)
- Terazidere
Posts describe basement textile workshops, contract sock and underwear makers, and rows of sock wholesalers; the area is said to be the second-largest centre for this trade after Mahmutpaşa, with Demirciler industrial estate above it. They note that the metro passes through the neighbourhood and describe dense buildings with either unfinished or brightly coloured rendered façades.
several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: terazidere (2006 – 2025-11)
- Altıntepsi
Posts say Sağmalcılar station is closer than Bayrampaşa-Maltepe for travelling down to the centre; having a metro station in the neighbourhood has long been a recurring advantage. Entries are sparse and mostly about transport, with little detail on streets or parking.
a few comments · ekşi sözlük: altıntepsi (2002 – 2026-06)
- İsmet Paşa, Altıntepsi
Posts describe migrant neighbours who have lived in the same homes for more than 60 years, with most said never to have moved. Sabri Akpınar Park, known as İncirlik, is described as the neighbourhood's centre.
single opinion · ekşi sözlük: sağmalcılar (2025-07)
- Kocatepe
Posts say entering the car park can take an hour at weekends and leaving half an hour; its numbering is confusing and finding a car is difficult. Proximity to IKEA, Koçtaş and Decathlon and being on the metro route are seen as advantages, while the lack of electric-vehicle charging is criticised.
several comments agree · ekşi sözlük: forum istanbul (2024-12 – 2026-06)
- Kocatepe
Parking is said to be less of a problem on ordinary days: the shopping centre has its own two-level car park, IKEA has three levels and Decathlon has another car park. Posts say the centre, which opened in 2009, draws shoppers from Gaziosmanpaşa, central Bayrampaşa and Esenler, and the area becomes busy at weekends.

The moves we see most in Bayrampaşa
- Moves between the two sides of the city: in either direction between Bayrampaşa and the Asian side; the route goes via Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge.
- One-person homes (1+1 – one bedroom plus a living room, or a studio): smaller flats and half-basements around metro stops; fewer belongings, a smaller vehicle and a two-person team.
- Family homes (2+1 or 3+1 – two or three bedrooms plus a living room): in the attached apartment blocks of Yıldırım, Muratpaşa and Kartaltepe; we plan for narrow stairs, dismantling and, if needed, an exterior lift.
- Workshop and wholesale moves: basement textile and sock workshops in Terazidere and around Demirciler industrial estate; machinery and shelving may require out-of-hours work.
- Offices and shops: the commercial corridors in Yenidoğan and Vatan and around Kocatepe's shopping centre; we plan for a weekday morning.
- Urban-renewal clearances and storage: especially in the İsmetpaşa reserve area and other buildings awaiting demolition; we plan the move and storage together.
You can check how many cubic metres your belongings take up and which vehicle size may be suitable on our moving calculator.

The municipal building is at No. 2 Abdi İpekçi Avenue, Yenidoğan neighbourhood. The e-municipality contact page lists 444 19 90 and bayrampasa@bayrampasa.bel.tr (source: e-Municipality contact, accessed 30.09.2026). The municipality's main website was inaccessible from outside Türkiye on the research day; we will complete the Municipal Police, Cleaning Directorate and Urban Renewal Directorate information after publication.
Permits for lorries and exterior lifts: for the same reason, we could not confirm whether a published rule or fee covers a removals lorry or mobile lift temporarily using the road (accessed 30.09.2026). We agree the lorry's stopping point during the visit and, if needed, contact Municipal Police in advance.
Old furniture, rubble and waste collection days: waste collection days, rubble disposal and the channel for old furniture could not be verified for the same reason. We take away the boxes and packing materials on moving day.
Public transport
İBB's station layer shows two lines within the district. The M1A metro's Otogar station is in Altıntepsi, Sağmalcılar in İsmet Paşa and Kocatepe in Kocatepe. The T4 tram's Karadeniz and Taşköprü stops are in Cevatpaşa. Metro İstanbul says M1A and T4 run from 06.00 to 00.00; M1B shares the track between Yenikapı and Otogar. Its line page also lists Bayrampaşa-Maltepe and Terazidere stations, though İBB's layer places these outside the district polygon. There is no Metrobus or Marmaray interchange within the district; M1 connects with Metrobus at Zeytinburnu and Merter, and T4 at Şehitlik and Topkapı (sources: Metro İstanbul M1A, M1B, T4, accessed 30.09.2026). For a move, junctions around the above-ground metro stations fill early; we do not wait with a lorry on tram streets and plan loading from a side street nearby.
